Bio
Well here I am ...
... better late than never
Hello…welcome to my website. Typically, on a musicians’ website, you’d find a bio written in the third person, often by someone in the industry who knows the musician … well, ha, I’m writing my own, because I’m not really in the music ‘industry’… no, I’m a retired school teacher who did the music for my school and local church for over thirty years, and now have some time to do other stuff … like writing and recording music.
While I did write some songs before I retired, I didn’t really have time to record them, write more, and record more, like I can now (well there was one … but I’ve redone that one for this album). Recording an album and putting it out there on a website was never really on my bucket list, but hey, funny how life goes. I guess I started thinking about it several years ago when I would perform one of my few original songs at some gig and have people come to me and say they really liked it… oh I knew that there were at least some people who liked my singing from my years doing music at church and school, and I talked about doing more with bandmates over the years, but never really had the time … but nearing and after retirement, one thing led to another and I starting writing more songs, and set up a recording studio in my basement (hey nothing fancy like you'd see in a pro recording studio … just some quality, basic, affordable equipment in my cave/music room), and started learning the basics of music editing – now that is a black hole of time, let me tell you … I have so much respect for the pros who know the editing and production programs that make today’s music that we all hear so clean, so professional … they are wizards; gurus … not to mention professional musicians in general ... I am just an amateur learning as I go … Anyway, I thought, hey, better late than never ;) I think I got to the point where my stuff sounds ok, but I know I still have a ways to go … and that kind of sucks in a way, because as I would get to a next level in recording/editing/producing, you know, learning something cool about what can be done (never mind just always thinking 'hmmm ... that could sound better'), well then I had to go back and fix and remix my stuff, which takes hours and hours and hours … and hours …….. and …. uh, where was I?... oh right … so here is my album, as well as covers that I have done … some of those are mixed better than others, some have just my guitar and vocals, others, percussion, banjo, lead … it just depended … some I feel I have to go back and remix someday (oh, absolutely!), but then there’s the time balance – make new stuff, or polish up the old stuff? Maybe some of both…
I have done gigs over the years with various different groups and people, in big and small venues, for small and large crowds … from open mics here (and in England!) to crowds of 2000 at convention centres … from rained out group picnics (hoping the rain wouldn’t blow too far into the tent I was playing under and electrocute me through my cables …), lots of weddings and funerals, to Local St. Patrick’s Day Irish nights (for charity), to larger theatres, to actual paid gigs. Once I almost opened for Terri Clarke at a Country Music Jamboree as rhythm guitar for a singer I was working with at the time, but Terri Clarke cancelled due to a scheduling conflict … oh well … some say everything happens for a reason. But not in any sense of the word do I think I’m anything but an enthusiastic amateur to whom music was a cool hobby, or in the case of church, a cool ministry … I’ll keep doing gigs here and there … we’ll see what comes along.
I absolutely have to thank my family for all their support through this process, and special gratitude to my lovely wife who was always positive and supportive and encouraging, and who never once complained about the countless hours I spent in the cave recording, editing and mixing ... not to mention the cost of the whole process (which was more than I thought it would be ...) thank you, thank you!
For now, look around my site, enjoy the music… maybe download some if you like (thanks in advance, your support will help me continue this crazy endeavor) … even recommend a visit here to your friends…
